The Grocers

The Rise and Rise of the Supermarket Chains

By Andrew Seth & Geoffrey Randall

A comparative review of this industry would not be doing this book justice. Not only do the authors discuss in detail the present UK market and its main players, but it also goes on to cover the European and America markets as well.

A well structured read, the authors introduce the reader to the history of grocery shopping and how the mere local grocer turned into multi-national supermarkets, selling everything from eggs to televisions and clothes.

This analytical book is also well supported with graphs, illustrations and evidence ranging from financial figures to brand strategies and store growth. It is particularly strong at contrasting strategies and key events with other competitors at the time in not just the UK, but also other countries.

Throughout the book there are highlight sections, which are used to introduce important topics or case studies relevant to the specific chapter. These are interesting for the reader, as not only do they highlight information, but they also put the chapter in the context of the whole industry.

Chapters nine onwards are used to discuss and reflect on strategic implications as well as introduce suggestions for future trends and market behaviour using the pervious chapters as reference.

An interesting read and one I would strongly recommend to any one in this industry, as well as those involved to strategic brand development as many principals can be used across industries.
